Do you know how frustrating it can be to come home with your fresh baked bread, rolls, bagels, or other tasty bakery goods, only to have to deal with difficult packaging to open the bags? Bags that aren’t easy to open hurt customer satisfaction and force them to rip the bag just to get at the baked goods inside. If you can’t open the packaging without destroying it, then customers won’t be able to reseal it or keep their delicious baked products fresh for days. Twist ties help solve this dilemma.

The problems with other bag closure methods

Think of yourself as a consumer. You go to the store and buy a loaf of sliced bread or a bag of 6 rolls for your family. That afternoon you decide to make a sandwich for lunch. But once you open the bag and take out a few slices of bread or a roll, how do you now reseal that bag so that your baked goods stay fresh?

There are multiple closure methods besides twist ties that bakers currently use, but all of them fall short:

Pressure sensitive tape—One way that bakers will close a bag is by using a pressure sensitive tape seal. Tape will hold the packaging shut, but the problem is that it requires the end user to rip the bag when it is initially opened, and it cannot be reused.

Plastic tabs—Another popular type of bag closure is plastic tabs. This method allows you to reseal the bag, but it does not protect the integrity of the baked product. Tabs are designed with a tight gate to stay in place on the bag, but once the bag is inserted through the gate and into the tab, it has room to loosen within the closure. As this loosening happens, the seal becomes undone, leading to unwanted air flow, causing the product could go stale faster than normal.

Heat or impulse seals—The third bag closure option is creating a permanent seal by melting the two sides of the bag together. This method is not very consumer friendly, because the packaging is destroyed during initial opening and there is no way for the end user to reseal the bag multiple times.

The advantage of using twist tie

Twist ties are superior to all three of these other options, because they maintain the tightness of the bag as the closure is applied and stay sealed until the consumer wants to open it. Plus, they are simple to use, protect the integrity and freshness of the product, and can be resealed many times. Twist tie is also effective in the freezer, remaining closed and keeping the dry air out, unlike tape which is prone to opening and plastic tabs that let cold air inside the bag, leading to freezer burn

For the producer of the product, twist tie is a very inexpensive bag closure method and offers advantages such as automated application, color coding for production, and the best buy dates. Also, because twist ties are easy to use and help avoid premature degradation of the product, customers are happy and more likely to return to your place of business.
